The process, put simply, is similar to that which causes the oil to rise up the wick of an oil lamp. A course of special blue bricks, which are impervious to water, and therefore stops the moisture rising, is often built in to the base of walls to prevent rising damp, and works extremely well as long as it isn't "bridged" or damaged in any way. Bridging the damp proof course can happen all too easily, either by allowing earth and plants to pile up against the outside wall, or by plastering below the DPC on the inside, and thus allowing the moisture in.

Another common cause of failure occurs when alterations are made to the property and and the damp proof course is compromised by new walls or holes made to allow utility services - gas, electricity, water, waste water, phone lines etc - into the house.
